2017 SPRING EXHIBIT
Edward Kinsella’s subjects house their own narratives; each is like a metaphor, standing for the story in which it is a character. In a skillful blend of highly-rendered realism and pared-down abstraction, Kinsella brings focus to the features that make each subject distinct and intriguing, while utilizing the periphery of the composition to lend context and setting via flat application of value and an elegant dwindling down to contour line. A graphic nod to illustrative styles of the 1920s-40s is corroborated by references to date in his titles. Each mixed media piece in this body of work, as great illustration does, will spur the storytelling imagination of its viewers.
