Elise Rugolo has side-stepped her typical non-objective encaustics and produced vibrant, painterly works over vintage record covers, with the series aptly titled “LP Collection.”  The artist has let the original image inform what is painted, whether such a springboard be color palette, form, or imagery.  While the pieces have the feel of mixed media collage, they are most essentially color and compositional explorations with variations on a theme.  Like a jazz musician, Rugolo explores each of these themes to their fullest: pushing and pulling, textures, motifs, repetition of bars, and blown out conceptions of composition.  Rugolo rises above the fray to tie together what would otherwise be formal chaos into a singularly proficient, expressive, and compelling voice.
