GIN O'KEEFE

Trained in the traditions of basketry and pottery, Gin O’Keefe subverts the expected application of these media in favor of a more raw expression. She calls attention to the history that feeds both her expertise and her resistance, referring to the form of vessel while simultaneously negating it. Her incredibly tactile manipulation of clay - bearing ample evidence of her touch - energizes both surface and structure. She says, “I know the right way, was trained in the right way, but this somehow leaves me empty.” In areas of craft with long histories of instruction and function-oriented technique, it takes courage to know, and then break, the long-held rules. The artist asks, “Would you believe me if I did it wrong?”
