Katie Musolff lives and works on the backwaters of the Mississippi River in Stoddard, Wisconsin. Working in watercolor and gouache, Musolff is inspired by a life spent outdoors. She paints from still-life, gathering specimens from river banks, marshes and wooded areas. Her subjects are often portrayed in simple repose, focusing on the quiet beauty of plant and animal life without nostalgia or sentimentality. Musolff's intimate studies do not depict picture-perfect specimens. Instead, they draw attention to the idiosyncrasies of nature: a pockmarked leaf, broken antennae or mismatched gradation of color on a bird's wing. With technical finesse, she is rendering a moment in time--capturing the artistic quality of the natural world around us.
