Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mark Grundy currently resides in Columbia, Missouri with his wife Karen. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Missouri, he spent several months in Santiago, Chile. Armed with the teachings of local artist and teacher Frank Stack, Grundy used watercolors to absorb the beauty of the Chilean landscape. Since that time he has continued the practice of painting his surroundings. Grundy travels through the Midwest along the Missouri River Valley and into the Appalachian region for his work for Independent Stave. As he travels through middle America, he captures small, intimate scenes that bespeak of a love for local scenery: soft foliage, wide and expansive bluff views, or the reflection of a sunset mirrored on the surface of the Missouri River.
