Sandra Eterovic creates characters and scenes out of everyday life. Her unabashedly 2-dimensional painting style draws on traditional storybook illustration and hearkens to 20th-century folk art and sign painting. Eterovic cuts out the form of most figures, removing the setting altogether, and, interestingly, reinforcing the sense of their flatness, even where she creates slotted stands and tips the work into the category of sculpture. Infused throughout this body of work is a hearty sense of humor, good-naturedly poking fun at the people, places, and norms that surround the artist. Even the most tenderly rendered portraits include a reminder not to take the subject too seriously, being housed on everyday objects such as a ping-pong paddle or a clothes hanger.
