2018 July Exhibit
Shanlin Ye grew up in China and received her BFA and MFA in Fine Art from Tsinghua University in Beijing. She lectured at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology for five years before moving to the United States in 2012. In this exhibit, Ye debuts with Sager Braudis Gallery her charged, abstracted portraits, executed primarily in ink and watercolor on paper. She is fascinated by the fluidity and ungoverned nature of these wet media, her brushwork alternating between release and control to show the emotional and physical tension in her subjects. This series, Masks, emphasizes the mystery and communicative power of the human face, which can alternately hide and reveal our true nature.
